What chimney cap replacement actually involves

The job starts on the roof, not the ladder foot. We measure the flue tile outside dimension, or the chase cover's full footprint, including the overhang. Then the old cap comes off. Rusted lag screws usually shear. On masonry stacks we clean the crown surface and check it for cracks before anything new is set. A cap bolted to a crumbling crown is wasted money.
