What a pilot light repair actually involves

We work the unit cold first. The lower louver or the glass front comes off. Then we look at the pilot hood, the electrode, and the thermocouple or thermopile tip. Gas is relit by hand. We watch the flame shape before touching anything else. A proper pilot wraps the sensor tip in a steady blue cone. Lazy, yellow, or lifting off tells us the orifice is partly blocked. Then we meter the sensor, open circuit and under load with the main valve calling, and check the wall switch and its wire run.

The usual culprit is debris, not a dead part. Spiders are drawn to the odorant in natural gas and spin webs inside pilot tubes during the long idle stretch between heating seasons. That gets cleaned, not replaced. Weak millivolt output, pitted valve contacts, or a corroded ground path on intermittent-pilot systems are separate problems.

Local wrinkle: a lot of gas log sets here sit in open masonry boxes from pre-1980 ranch and bungalow stock. Those need the damper clamp and vent path verified, plus a CO reading at the hearth, before we hand the fireplace back.

On 1980s tract prefabs, we check the refractory panels too. Warped or burned-through panels void the UL listing. Relighting that firebox is not work we will do.
