What a chimney inspection actually covers in Simi Valley

The work starts inside, at the hearth. Drop cloths down, damper opened, smoke shelf checked by hand. Then a mirror and light into the throat. The firebox joints get read first, then gaps in refractory mortar, then the damper plate itself. Rusted throat dampers are common in pre-1980 ranch and bungalow stock. Next the smoke chamber, where corbelled brick is often left unparged. Then the flue, tile by tile, on camera. Last stop is the roof.

Up top we look at the crown, the cap, and the flashing seam. Cracked crowns shed water straight into the tile joints below.
